Mohammed Al-Hajjaj stands at the helm of Engie Saudi Arabia, steering the company toward a greener, more sustainable future in one of the world’s most dynamic energy markets. Appointed CEO in May 2023, Al-Hajjaj brings a wealth of experience, a passion for innovation, and a deep commitment to Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030. His leadership has positioned Engie as a key player in the Kingdom’s transition to low-carbon energy and clean water solutions. With a robust portfolio valued at over SR33 billion (approximately $9 billion), Al-Hajjaj is driving transformative projects that align with global sustainability goals while meeting the Kingdom’s growing energy and water demands.

A Journey Rooted in Expertise and Vision

Mohammed Al-Hajjaj’s career spans over 19 years, blending global expertise with local insight. He began his professional journey in 2006 with Schneider Electric, where he spent a decade in various leadership roles. His early work focused on solar energy solutions across the Middle East, showcasing his commitment to sustainable technologies long before they became mainstream. By 2016, he had joined General Electric, leading corporate transformation and heading the power conversion unit in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. His ability to navigate complex markets and drive innovation earned him a reputation as a forward-thinking leader.

In 2018, Mohammed Al-Hajjaj joined the Saudi Ministry of Investment (formerly the General Investment Authority), where he served as Executive Managing Director for Regional Investment Development. During his five-year tenure, he played a pivotal role in attracting investment to the Kingdom’s energy, water, and waste management sectors. His work aligned closely with Vision 2030, Saudi Arabia’s ambitious plan to diversify its economy and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. This experience equipped him with a unique blend of public and private sector expertise, making him the ideal candidate to lead Engie Saudi Arabia.

Al-Hajjaj’s academic credentials are equally impressive. He holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals and a master’s degree in engineering systems management from the University of Dayton in the United States. His education, combined with leadership training from prestigious institutions, has shaped his strategic approach to tackling complex challenges in the energy sector.

Leading Engie Saudi Arabia’s Growth

Since taking the reins at Engie Saudi Arabia, Al-Hajjaj has focused on expanding the company’s footprint in desalination, low-carbon energy, and clean energy projects. Engie, a global leader in low-carbon energy and services, employs over 2,000 people in the Kingdom and generates 7,600 MW of power, accounting for 10% of Saudi Arabia’s installed capacity. Additionally, the company produces 176 million imperial gallons of desalinated water daily, meeting 11% of the Kingdom’s water production needs. Under Al-Hajjaj’s leadership, Engie is not just meeting these demands but redefining how energy and water solutions can drive sustainability.

His mandate includes driving growth, fostering strategic partnerships, and promoting operational excellence. Al-Hajjaj’s vision is clear: to accelerate Saudi Arabia’s transition to a carbon-neutral future while ensuring reliable and affordable energy solutions. His leadership has already made significant strides, with Engie Saudi Arabia playing a central role in some of the Kingdom’s most ambitious projects.

Notable Projects Shaping the Future

Renewable Energy-Powered Desalination

One of Al-Hajjaj’s most impactful initiatives is advancing renewable energy-powered desalination. In an interview with Arab News at the Solar & Storage Live KSA exhibition in Riyadh, he highlighted the potential for Saudi Arabia to achieve a nationwide supply of clean water through fully renewable desalination. “In recent years, we have seen significant advances in energy storage, making it feasible and practical and increasingly affordable,” he said. This vision is becoming a reality with projects like the Al-Khafji desalination plant, which produces 90,000 cubic meters of water daily, and the Jazlah plant, with a capacity of 600,000 cubic meters per day. These facilities leverage renewable energy sources, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and setting a global benchmark for sustainable water production.

Al-Hajjaj’s optimism is shared by industry experts, including Francois-Xavier Boul, Engie’s Managing Director for the Middle East and North Africa. Together, they are pushing for innovations in energy storage to ensure a round-the-clock renewable energy supply, addressing challenges like solar panel inactivity at night. With battery storage costs plummeting, as noted in a 2023 U.S. National Renewable Energy Laboratory report, Al-Hajjaj’s leadership is positioning Engie to capitalize on these advancements.

Al Dur Power & Water Company Refinancing

In February 2024, Al-Hajjaj oversaw a significant milestone with the Al Dur Power & Water Company, in which Engie holds a stake. The company secured a $1.2 billion refinancing facility from a syndicate of 17 local, regional, and international banks. This deal, a testament to Al-Hajjaj’s strategic acumen, strengthens Engie’s financial position and supports its ongoing investments in clean energy and water infrastructure in the region. The project underscores his ability to foster partnerships that drive economic and environmental impact.

ENGIE Factory: Fostering Innovation

Another feather in Al-Hajjaj’s cap is the launch of ENGIE Factory, Engie Group’s venture-building arm, in February 2024. This initiative focuses on investing in and supporting early-stage startups in the Middle East, particularly those innovating in clean energy and sustainability. By nurturing entrepreneurial talent, Al-Hajjaj is helping build a vibrant ecosystem that aligns with Saudi Arabia’s goal of becoming a hub for innovation. This move strengthens Engie’s portfolio and positions the Kingdom as a leader in the global energy transition.

A Commitment to Collaboration and Impact

Beyond his corporate achievements, Al-Hajjaj serves on the board of the UN Global Compact, advocating for sustainable business practices worldwide. His leadership extends beyond Engie, influencing policy and industry standards across the region. He is known for his ability to bridge global expertise with local priorities, fostering collaborations that benefit both the Kingdom and its international partners.

Al-Hajjaj’s human touch shines through in his commitment to his team. Leading over 2,000 employees, he emphasizes empowerment and professional growth, ensuring that Engie’s workforce is equipped to tackle the challenges of a rapidly evolving industry. His approachable demeanor and focus on teamwork have earned him respect among colleagues and partners alike.

A Vision for a Sustainable Tomorrow

Mohammed Al-Hajjaj’s journey is a testament to the power of vision, expertise, and dedication. From his early days at Schneider Electric to his current role as CEO of Engie Saudi Arabia, he has consistently championed sustainable solutions that address the Kingdom’s most pressing needs. Projects like renewable-powered desalination and ENGIE Factory reflect his forward-thinking approach, while his leadership in securing major financial deals demonstrates his strategic prowess.

As Saudi Arabia marches toward Vision 2030, Al-Hajjaj remains a driving force in the energy sector. His ability to blend innovation with practicality ensures that Engie Saudi Arabia is not just keeping pace but setting the standard for a carbon-neutral future. With a clear focus on clean energy, water security, and economic growth, Mohammed Al-Hajjaj is shaping a legacy that will benefit generations to come.
